John Vance Academic Scholarship

Supporting the Next Generation of Aging Services Professionals

The Northwest Ohio Gerontological Association (NOGA) is proud to offer the John Vance Academic Scholarship, created in memory of one of our most impactful members and mentors. This scholarship supports undergraduate or graduate students in Northwest Ohio who are preparing for careers in gerontology, social work, healthcare, or other aging-related fields.

Who Was John Vance?

John Vance was a respected social worker and longtime advocate for older adults in Northwest Ohio. He served as NOGA Chairperson and President from 1987 to 1991, and led community efforts as Director of Information Services for the Elderly (ISE). Known for his compassion, mentorship, and commitment to aging services, John later continued his work as Housing Director at the Area Office on Aging.

In 1996, NOGA launched a student scholarship in his honor. By 1998, the award was officially renamed the John Vance Educational Fund, recognizing his dedication to students, service providers, and the aging population. John was remembered as “a kind and gentle man, quick to smile and offer an encouraging word.”
